Here’s a low-cost, easy-to-use substitute for the Hester-Dendy that even fuctions in salt water. While it’s a matter of taste, some investigators prefer the basket because only the natural substrate materials such as stones and twigs are used for colonization. This sampler is made of one inch square galvanized wire and measures 7-1/2″ in diameter, 12″ in length. The wire is coated with PVC to resist corrosion. One end is hinged and is tied with a nylon releasable tie. The other end is permanently fastened.
